Commuters at Chelmsford Station are set to experience a poignant new art installation titled Hide, donated by renowned local artist and Art & Sip Events founder, James Mackenzie. This captivating acrylic painting, measuring five feet high by three feet wide, features thick, expressive strokes and a fascinating duality: one side showcases a laughing, almost frenzied face rendered in warm hues of red, orange, and yellow, while the reverse side reveals a more menacing expression in cooler tones of greens and blues. This juxtaposition invites viewers to reflect on the complexities of mental health and the often unseen struggles that lie beneath the surface of daily commuters, exploring themes of mental health, societal pressures, and the metaphorical masks individuals wear to navigate the stresses of modern life.
Founded by the Essex & Suffolk Community Rail Partnership, this project is dedicated to supporting the art community and enhancing public spaces. Plus, for each piece, a generous donation is made to cancer research. Hide will be rotated on a monthly basis, ensuring that commuters and visitors alike have the opportunity to engage with both sides of its thought-provoking narrative.
James Mackenzie commented, “It is my hope that Hide sparks meaningful conversation about the masks we wear and the emotions we hide, while also contributing to the fight against cancer.”

Beyond the Hide installation, James Mackenzie is the founder of Art & Sip, a creative workshop experience designed to make art accessible and social, while promoting mental wellbeing and self-expression. Art & Sip workshop allows the participants to explore their creativity in a relaxed, supportive environment, reinforcing the idea that art is not just for artists, it’s for everyone!
By bringing Hide to Chelmsford Station, James takes the philosophy of art beyond the workshop, using public art to enrich our local cultural scene and foster a commitment to community well-being. Sparking conversations about mental health in everyday life and serves as a visual reminder for busy commuters to pause, reflect, and embrace moments of creativity and self-care.
